How to handle alternative job titles in tech
In many cases when you are searching for tech talent, you miss out on a big part of the talent pool because you don’t include all the alternative job titles candidates are using on their profile. Especially in tech, people get creative in how they call themselves and companies think of exciting job titles to help make their open position more attractive for talent. Whether you’re on LinkedIn or on other platforms, when you search in the (job) title sections, headlines or summaries of profiles, it will improve your search results significantly when you include job title synonyms in your search separated by an OR statement.
Two mechanics are worth knowing before you paste anything below. First, OR has to be capitalised: LinkedIn only reads it as an operator in caps, and a lowercase "or" is treated as an ordinary keyword. Second, LinkedIn supports no wildcards. Braces, brackets, angle brackets and asterisks are all ignored, so there is no way to write Engineer* and catch Engineering for free. Every variant has to be spelled out, which is exactly why the strings below are as long as they are. Exact phrases go in paired quotation marks; single words do not need them.
